This is Slow Cooked, a collection of weekly musings, ongoing projects, and the media I’m consuming; delivered every Thursday.
It's been a week of birthdays in the family, including my Gujarati birthday (Janamtithi for the uninitiated).
As we often do, we celebrated it over a meal at my grandmother's home.
While we were there, she handed me a box with candle holders from my first birthday. Along with other candles, candle holders, and "cake toppers" from my childhood.
I had no idea she had kept any of it.
Here were objects that I had little to no memory of that connected me directly to my past, each with its own unique character.
I decided to document them through a series of photographs / objects on canvas.
My grandmother gave me this carry bag for the box. It’s from Beriozka, a retail store in Moscow from when Russia was still the Soviet Union.
This is part of an ongoing project.
